25-May-1999 The Prime Minister declares the Centre will take all possible steps to push back infiltrators in Kargil. The Kargil War, also known as the Kargil conflict, was an undeclared armed conflict between India and Pakistan that took place between May and July 1999 in the Kargil district of Indian-administered Kashmir with more fighting along the Line of Control (LoC). In India, the conflict is also referred to as Operation Vijay (Hindi: विजय, lit. "Victory"), which was the name of the Indian operation to clear out the Kargil sector. The Indian Air Force's role in joint operations with Indian Army ground troops during the war was aimed at flushing out Pakistani irregulars and Pakistan Army troops from captured Indian positions along the LoC. This particular operation was codenamed Operation Safed Sagar (Hindi: ऑपरेशन सफेद सागर, lit. "Operation White Sea").
