25-May-1996 DMK-led coalition ministry headed by R.V. Janakiraman sworn in Pondicherry. R. V. Janakiraman (8 January 1941[citation needed] – 10 June 2019) was the Chief Minister of the Union Territory of Pondicherry (Puducherry).He was elected from Nellithope assembly constituency. He served from 26 May 1996 to 18 March 2000.

25-May-1996 Kathapurushan' wins best film national award. The 43rd National Film Awards, presented by Directorate of Film Festivals, the organisation set up by Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, India to felicitate the best of Indian Cinema released in the year 1995. Ceremony took place in 1996 and awards were given by then President of India, Shankar Dayal Sharma.

25-May-1996 Maharashta govt. announces decision to revive Sri Krishna Commission set up to probe the 1993 Mumbai riots. Srikrishna Commission  or  Justice B.N. Srikrishna Commission of Inquiry  was constituted by the government of Maharashtra under Justice Srikrishna for investigating the causes of the Bombay riots. For five years until 1998, he examined victims, witnesses and alleged perpetrators. The Commission was disbanded by the shiv Sena led government in January 1996 and on public opposition was later reconstituted on 28 May 1996; though when it was reconstituted its terms of reference were extended to include the Mumbai bomb blasts that followed in March 1993. The report of the commission stated that the tolerant and secular foundations of the city were holding even if a little shakily.
